Introducing our new Saturday fun photo feature: What's New in Your Pantry?

Greek seasoning

If I took a snapshot of my pantry a year ago, or 5 or 10 years ago, I'd realize how much my cooking changes over time. These days, I use different salts, more hot sauces, more limes than lemons. I have spices on my spice rack now that I'd never heard of a few years ago. There's always something new.

Now, with The Perfect Pantry® just a few months away from its 10-year anniversary, it seems like the absolute right time to think about what's in our pantries now that wasn't there when this blog began talking about cooking from the pantry, back in 2006. (Or, if you haven't had your own pantry for that long, what's in your pantry now that wasn't there a year ago.)

So, get out your smartphone, and get ready to play

WHAT'S NEW IN YOUR PANTRY?

Our new Saturday fun feature, created by my husband Ted (the official taste-tester of The Perfect Pantry), gives us each a chance to prowl around in our own pantries, and share the treasures we discover. Here's how it works:

  1. Find something in your pantry, fridge or freezer, cupboards, or kitchen that wasn't there 10 years ago. Maybe it's a spice or condiment you use now that you didn't know existed back then. Maybe it's a new version of something you've always had (a different brand of soy sauce or olive oil?). Or, maybe it's a tool or utensil that's essential to the way you cook today. If you haven't had your own kitchen for 10 years, find something you have now that you didn't have a year ago.
  2. Snap a photo, quick and easy with your smartphone! Yes, you can crop or play with filters, if you wish. Remember, we're all about fun on Saturdays.
  3. Email the photo to me: [email protected].
  4. Include your name, and where your pantry is located (city, or state, or country).
  5. Make sure to say what the pantry item is (especially if your photo has more than one thing in it), and include a sentence or two about why it's in your pantry.

You may send as many photos as you like, whenever you like. Please send each photo in its own email (easy to do from your smartphone), with your name on each one. Send one photo, ten photos, or more. I have tons of things in my pantry now that weren't there 10 years ago.

To get us started, I snapped this photo of Greek Seasoning. Honestly, I'd never even heard of it 10 years ago, and now I can't cook without it. It's my go-to seasoning for roast chicken, and even if I didn't use it for anything else, that would be reason enough to keep it in my pantry. Greek Seasoning: that's what's new in my pantry.

I'm looking forward to sharing your photos, so snap a shot and email to me:

[email protected]

Thanks!

This is going to be fun!
I'm going to guess that perhaps 90% of what's new in my pantry comes from reading your blog over the past three or so years.

The first photo I'm going to send, though, I found on my own.
I'll keep you guessing for now.

Fun idea. I hope you are going to give us a few recipes ideas for each pantry item when you ideas to share. I have a couple of new things that I don't think you have heard about, so I will play!

This will be fun! First thoughts, most of the 'new' are red.

Connie, oh, the suspense! Can't wait to see your first item.

Kalyn, if someone sends an ingredient that's new to me, I promise to purchase it and create a recipe for it. Absolutely!

Susan, such an interesting observation. I imagine the same holds true for my pantry, if I really examine it.

Lydia,

You’re on to any new items you don’t have in your pantry you’ll purchase and create your own new recipes with!
I already sent you my two new items and why I’m learning and using them.

Ken, thanks for accepting the challenge! Can't wait to see your photos.
