Oatmeal: like or dislike?

SteelCutDrum

Welcome to Like or Dislike, where you get to share how you really feel about ingredients from the pantry, ingredients I'm thinking about adding to my pantry, other seasonal foods, and favorite cooking gear. The things you like are sure to find their way to the recipes here on The Perfect Pantry, so do tell.

My love affair with oatmeal begins and ends with oatmeal raisin cookies. I love them more than chocolate chips, more than Snickerdoodles, more than Oreos, and I even love baking them, but that's where it ends for me and oatmeal. There is something about the aroma of cooking oatmeal that just doesn't sit well with me, and I've never been able to get past that. I've prepared oatmeal in the slow cooker, and when Cousin Martin comes to visit, I always have oatmeal in the house so he can make his favorite breakfast. My husband Ted likes it, too, but doesn't make it very often, perhaps because I walk around the house with my face scrunched up and, okay, yes, making a comment here and there. How do you feel about oatmeal?

What's not to like? So many ways to enhance oatmeal, many types. Have used both regular and extra thick to make delightful sourdough bread.

Oh, adore!
In cookies, granola bars, breakfast hot ánd cold, cooking my own dogfood etc etc etc.

love oats in granolas, cookies, breads, streusel toppings, as filler in meatloaves/balls; have been exploring oats in smoothies. altho i can handle a bowl of oatmeal ever so often, they're not my fave breakfast food anymore, not since i've made the effort to cut back on butter, cream and sugar in them OR like when i was growing up--with crumbled buttered toast or sausage or bacon....they're kind of boring now....but dried fruits have been an acceptable substitute.....most of the time HAHA

I'm a Quaker Oats fan - have had it for breakfast for years and years.

I like steel cut oatmeal more than regular oats my favorite is King Arthur which i purchase from their website when you open a bag it smells like walnuts!

Oatmeal... I love it hot, cold (overnight refrigerator oatmeal ) sweet, savory, thick, thin, steel cut... combine it with dark chocolate and I'm in heaven!

I love oatmeal for breakfast, and Bob's Red Mill Extra Thick Rolled Oats is the kind I've used for years. I make it in the microwave, just oatmeal, water, and a little salt, and when the oatmeal is cooked to my liking I stir in a couple of spoonfuls of peanut butter. So good.

And ironically oatmeal cookies aren't something I have ever gotten that excited about!

I love oatmeal.

My hubby & I both love, love steel cut oats. We eat them quite often. I like mine with my sugar free maple syrup & cinnamon. Hubby likes them with maple syrup, butter & chunky peanut butter. What's not to like. They are so good for you. I also sprinkle on our dogs food. They like them too🐾❤️

Love oatmeal! Oatmeal goes into meatloaves around this house and we always have it for breakfast in the cooler weather. I am the steel cut oats lover in the house so I cook a serving in the small slow cooker over night.

Love it. I eat it for breakfast several times a week during the cold weather. I also do like Oatmeal Raisin cookies very much, put I prefer chocolate cookies and cookies with chocolate in them. I guess I need to try oatmeal cookies with chocolate chunks added instead of raisins.

Love oatmeal! Eat it almost every morning for breakfast. Because of Outlander, I switched to Scottish oatmeal. It's very good & worth it. I use Bob's Red Mill. I make it in a large batch on top of the stove. Takes 10 minutes to cook. I didn't like steel cut oatmeal.

Lydia, here's where we part ways!
I grew up with Quaker Old Fashioned Oats, with a bit of butter, a spoon of brown sugar - never much. I still love it - with grated apple, a spoonful of miso or peanut butter, or nothing added. I cook it a long time so it's very creamy (water only, just more of it).
And definitely steel cut too, if I think of it the night before - 3 or 4 parts water to 1 part oats.
For a few years now I've been playing with combinations - various ratios of oats with cornmeal or grits, buckwheat groats, barley flakes, quinoa....
I made an oatmeal lace cookie long ago. Should make them again.

Love it!! You've go to add the right balance of butter, brown sugar and fresh fruit...either bananas, strawberries or raspberries! DELISH!!

I really want to like oatmeal. I try it in various recipes and approaches but it just doesn't do much for me. I keep trying because I want to like it but find it just blah.

Love it! Use MaCanns instant in the am..Use regular Quaker Oats in my fabulous "no flour/no sugar blueberry muffins.
