Peanut butter: like or dislike?

Peanut butter

Welcome to Like or Dislike, where you get to share how you really feel about ingredients from the pantry, ingredients I'm thinking about adding to my pantry, other seasonal foods, even favorite cooking gear. Do you like, dislike, love, crave, despise, wish for, use in your own kitchen? The things you like are sure to find their way to the recipes here on The Perfect Pantry, so do tell!

It's been decades since I've eaten a peanutbutterandjelly sandwich. Even as a kid, I never liked peanut butter (and I'm not crazy about grape jelly, either). When my friends brought PB&J sandwiches for school lunch, I brought tuna salad, egg salad, or bologna and cheese (yes I did). However, there's always peanut butter in my own pantry. I use it to make sauces, dips, marinades, and my pumpkin "hummus" that's so good at this time of year. My husband Ted can dip a spoon into a jar of peanut butter and lick the spoon like a lollypop. I don't understand that.

Peanut butter: like or dislike?

Last week: Store-bought pie crust. I was relieved to see that more people use it than not, because I'm such a huge fan. However, my hat's off to those who swear by homemade crust. Remember, there's no right or wrong in Like or Dislike!

peanut butter is bad for you!

Love it. It's indispensable in my home. I cook with it like you do, but also put it on crudités for a snack.
I do enjoy a pb&j every now and then, but grape jelly? Ew! Strawberry jam or nothing! It's also great in pb, banana, bacon and honey sandwiches.

Oh yes, I love peanut butter! I can eat it off the spoon or a knife also, but only want peanut butter dessert foods.

I'm not in the dip-a-spoon-and-lick group, but I do love PB&J sandwiches. Peanut butter isn't very popular in India for some reason. Few domestic manufacturers, and the imported stuff is pretty expensive. I haven't understood why, especially because peanuts are very popular!

I love peanut butter! I can eat it off a spoon like Ted, and I also love it stuffed into celery or spread on crackers. And peanut butter cookies are my all-time favorite. But I don't like peanut butter sandwiches either (and never did; even as a kid I would ask for tuna sandwiches whenever mom got out the peanut butter and jelly.

Yes! We love peanut butter! Spread on a hot English muffin, apple slices, ginger snaps, stuffed into celery, and lastly spread on two pieces of bread then strawberry jelly swirled within. Pass on the "Goober's". Have yet to try the multiple recipes that mix it with noodles and such. A look outside my box is bound to happen as I keep tearing recipes out of magazines...

PB and bacon is my new fave. It's a great distraction from the icky store-bought gluten-free bread that I now eat. I also love Lydia's peanut sauce recipe. With a side of something green, peanut sauce on gluten-free pasta or rice noodles is a great quick dinner.

My brothers and I grew up on it and my daughter was nourished on it in utero (I craved, and ate, many peanut butter & banana sandwiches on rye toast). A breakfast of toasted English muffin spread with PB and topped by a ripe tomato slice? Heaven.

Nowadays, my body rebels and I get raging heartburn if I eat it. I guess I must have consumed my fair share.

I'm with Ted.
I love peanut butter. I never had PB&J as a kid, but now I look forward to it. No grape jelly, though; I, too, am in the strawberry jam camp. On whole wheat. Nutritious and delicious.
I use it in baking, too. Cooking, not so much, but I would give it a shot.

I'm not a lover of peanut butter not even when young. I do love Thai peanut sauce though (when there is leftover sauce I dream of licking the bowl).

I love peanut butter, love it! I grew up eating peanut butter sandwiches all the time but never with jelly! Didn't like it. Loved it with bananas, potato chips even salami. My favorite was melting peanut butter on hot toast!

I go through very long periods of time with no peanut butter in the house because it is a luxury item in France though I can buy Skippy pretty easily these last couple of years. My husband and older son loathe it while younger son and I love it!

I adore it! From fluffernutters to Thai noodles and everything in between. However, just last week I tested positive for a peanut allergy. None too happy about that.

Love peanIt butter. Favorite is peanut butter and marshmallow creme sandwiches. Peanut butter chicken is also good.

Love it! Though now we are mostly eating homemade almond butter.

I like peanut butter, but I don't love it. Every once in a while, nothing will do except a piece of peanut butter and jam or honey toast; I'm just that hungry. I do truly enjoy (and like to make) chicken satay with peanut sauce. But I don't love it like my husband does. He eats it daily and often keeps a jar on his desk. He, like your hub, Lydia, eats it with a spoon. A huge box of saltine crackers is a constant presence in our pantry because they go so well with peanut butter and a glass of milk. Holdover from childhood, I think. Happy Saturday!

I like the taste but not the stick-to-the-roof-of-your-mouthiness. Like you, Lydia, I keep it around to make Thai sauces. I sometimes buy other nut butters at Whole Foods and then they sit in the pantry forever.

Love it! I'm with Ted- never wash the spoon after dipping into the jar--always lick it clean. It's my afternoon snack on one slice of bread to satisfy the munchies--'til dinnertime.

Never have been a fan but also never had a choice to say I didn't want it when it showed up on my sandwich as I was growing up. Now, it's okay in recipes -- peanut sauce, for example. And once in a blue moon, Jif creamy with a bit of good, strawberry jam on squishy white bread will take care of a sweet tooth as long as I have a glass of cold milk to go with it.

Don't really care one way or the other. But recently, rather than buying it, I make it in my new (splurged) Vitamix. That's fun! And reassuring that I know exactly what's in it -- only peanuts which I roast first in the oven. Waiting to finish our 3 lb bag of peanuts. Almond butter is next.

My mother-in-law made peanut butter gravy ! It is just basic white gravy with peanut butter for the "fat" flavoring instead of some kind of grease. They did not eat a lot of meat so this was used.

I didn't eat peanut butter after childhood until about 5 years ago and now I could eat it everyday. I mostly eat it on banana slices since I've eliminate bread most of the time. When I do have bread, I have peanut butter with srawberry or red pepper jelly. De-li-cious. I also eat it on celery slices. My fav is Skippy All natural with Honey. I gave up peanut butter for Lent two years ago and had withdrawal pains...seriously.
I also use it for making a delicious salad dressing. Have to go have some PB now.

I'm with Ted I love a peanut butter "lollipop"

I never ever contaminated my peanut butter sandwich with jelly! But I do like grape jelly.

As much as I love peanut butter I don't like peanut butter cookies. I never use it as an ingredient

Love it. On toasty English muffins with a banana on the side.

Peanut Butter - the locally made kind, not homogenized or salted - like it very much.

I like peanut butter as an ingredient in Asian sauces. It was Mom's secret ingredient in her egg rolls. I occasionally eat peanut butter on apples. I have a friend who regularly eats it. I don't know anyone else who does. I did not eat it growing up. I like the Krema brand from Ohio. It has only 1 ingredient: peanuts.

Love pb. One of my favourite little books is 101 Things To Do With Peanut Butter by Pamela Bennett. Do I need professional help?

I love peanut butter!

Yes---& most nut butters! Eat almond butter on toast most days; pumpkin seed butter is not beautiful, but is delicious. Always buy just peanut butter with NOTHING added. Will sprinkle on grey salt sometimes. Yes, good with saltines.
Our father used to make us 'peanut butter under the broiler'--changes the taste for the better.
I might have met one person in my life who did that--somehow folk don't think of it.

I like it - use it for snacks not so much meals - good to eat before taking pills, coats the stomach.

Peanut butter came off the menu when I left home, returned when I had kids. Then I realized I still loved it!
Asian peanut sauce seals the deal, and makes just about everything taste good.
Yes to just peanuts. When you have good peanuts who needs salt or bad fats? Crunchy yes.
And good peanuts are not bad for you. They may carry aflotoxin, so stick with good sources.

I eat it every day.. but I only eat Kraft Crunchy Peanut butter, which is only available in Canada, so my mom brings many jars down with her when she comes to visit! PBJ, Peanut butter and banana, and if you haven't tried Peanut butter with sweet onion on toasted bread, you are in for a treat. I love to cook with it, thai and Indonesian recipes, as well as the all time fave peanut butter cookies!

So love PB! Not just for PB&J's which I love. Thai, Indonesian, and when I'm looking for salty to go with sweet, a honeycrisp apple with PB, hullo!

I love peanut butter! Love PB&J's, peanut butter and celery, pad thai and so much more.

I know I'm late on this one, forgive me! Put me in the love it category. Prefer Jif, creamy or crunchy doesn't matter. And for some reason, it does go best with grape jelly, and on celery or in cooking, it's all good. One thing my dad taught me is the art of the toasted peanut butter sandwich. It involves replacing cheese with PB and toasting it in butter!

Like it. Don't love it. Can live without it. But this post makes me want to make a PB&J sammich. Something I have had in a very long time. :-)

Totally late to the party here, but I LOVELOVELOVE peanut butter! We use Adams Crunchy Natural on a spoon straight from the jar (not as good as JIF, but without all the sugar, etc.), for peanut sauce, putting it on hamburgers. Yes, peanut butter hamburger. mmmmmm.
As a kid I ate it "peanut butter in a bowl" style. My mom would stir it up with CORN SYRUP :-0 in a bowl & we'd use our finger to eat it. Weird, but good I guess. I don't do that now! :-)

Where are the civilized human beings speaking out against this disgusting horror called peanut butter???!!! The very smell of it makes me want to vomit and the color is pretty awful as well. How many hours could I spend insulting this stain on human civilization - who knows but I could go on for days and days. Now just to prove that I'm not totally closed minded, I genuinely enjoy peanut sauce as used in so many Asian cuisines. Now why I can accept one and not the other is a mystery - and one I'd be happy to never resolve. Peanut butter is just awful.
