The Pantry Quiz #87
Multiple Choice
[This weekend my husband Ted and I are in San Francisco, visiting our cousins Ben and Sandra. Ben is a chemist, so he's got an advantage here, but if you took chemistry in high school, you're ready for this quiz.] Salt might be the world's most common seasoning, found in everyone's pantry. I've got several types of salt on hand at all times. So, today's question: what is the chemical composition of kosher salt?
__________
Please leave your answer in the comments, and let us know whether you have this ingredient in your pantry.
[Last week's answer: Slightly less than 10% of the world's olive oil production is extra virgin olive oil.]

NaCl
Sodium Chloride....salt. I have found that I do like cooking with kosher flake salt....with the exception of using for baking.
Awesome question....Thanks!
I have no idea, and I don't know how it's different from regular salt either!
Unlike cousin Ben, I was a history major but I'll give it a go. Scientifically, a salt is the product of the combination of a base and an acid (e.g Potassium plus hydrochloric acide yields potassium chloride) but what we commonly call salt is sodium chloride (NaCl). Whether it is "Kosher Salt" or sea salt, or iodized salt, the salt itself is both kosher and chemically NaCl! Great question!!
NaCl or sodium chloride.
