Currypowder

True or False?

Garam masala is another name for the Madras curry powder we buy in tins at the grocery store, and the two can be used interchangeably.

Please leave your answer in the comments, and let us know whether you have this ingredient in your pantry.

[Last week's answer: Chipotle is a smoked chile, as are ancho, guajillo and morita chile peppers. Habañero is a fresh chile, making it the odd one out.]

False. Garam masala is more of an all-purpose seasoning blend. Madras curry powder is... a curry blend. LOL.

Yes, it is basically true. Garam masala is a mixture (masala) of spices. However, it is not as hot as some curry powders I have used. I do have some on my shelf along with other curry blends. It just depends on the depth of flavor I choose as to which curry blend I will select.

I sure do have some. I cook Indian food every week. Love it.

Garam masala is a blend of sweet and savory seasonings, not what we think of as 'curry powder.' It is often used as a finishing spice, added at the end of preparation. I've made it - roasting and grinding, and purchased it, and it's always delicious! and always on my shelf.

I would just guess False. Different parts of India? Madras curry powder invented by the Brits? Curry powder has.... curry and Garam masala doesn't?

THEY are not the same. Curry is usually hot and garam masala is not.

If they are the same, mine sure don't look the same.
My Madras curry powder has a yellow tint from turmeric compared to my garam masala.

Going with False. While both are blends, garam masala has a different body of flavor.

False. Garam masala is a different blend of spices from Madras curry. I have garam masala in my pantry - it's my favorite curry!

I am inclined to say no, but I don't know for sure!

False. They both have different spices. While garam masala is sun dried and blitz and contains a variation on the standard cinnamon, bay leaves, cloves, peppercorns, coriander seeds, cumin, black cumin, black and green cardamom pods..

Curry powder has a good measure of turmeric, roasted lentils, asafoetida, fenugreek seeds, coriander seeds etc
