The Pantry Quiz #57

Chipotle peppers

How Hot Is It?

Let's have some fun with our old friend, the Scoville Scale. Rank the following chile peppers in order from lowest to highest score on the Scoville Scale (i.e. mildest to hottest).

1. Poblano
2. Chipotle
3. Jalapeño
4. Scotch Bonnet
5. Cubanelle

Please leave your answer in the comments, and let us know whether you have these ingredients in your pantry.

[Last week's answer: Lots of great answers, almost all correct, with various explanations. Peanuts are ground nuts (actually legumes); the others are tree nuts.]

Lydia,
I have not yet had my morning tea, so I will not even attempt an answer, especially since hot peppers are not my forte!

I will say that my favorite ice cream place in Rehoboth, Delaware is named Peppers, and it used to be a little hole in the wall with some ice cream and also a huge variety of hot sauces (not to be used on the ice cream). However, it's mushroomed into a little hole in the wall with tons of amazing flavors, with clever names, and the European kids who come to work there in the summer must be very talented to memorize all of those names, and their locations, in a second language.

How's that for tap dancing around an unknown answer? :)

Okay, this is my guess:

Cubanelle
Poblano
Jalapeno
Chipotle
Scotch Bonnet

Cubanelle
Pablano
Jalapeno / Chipotle (Same peppers, but the smoking process can intensify the heat)
scotch bonnet (Danger Will Robinson! :))

Fun!

Cubanelle
Poblano
Jalapeño
Chipotle
Scotch Bonnet

I've got them all either in the pantry or the fridge

5, 1, 3, 2, 4.

Cubanelle
Poblano
Jalapeno
Chipotle
Scotch Bonnet

5
1
3
2
4

I put jalapenos 2nd on the list, if I buy them commercially, since they are nearly tasteless. The ones my neighbor grows would take third place -- they have the kind of taste you expect.

I agree with everyone above. I grew cubanelle this year - love all the ones on the list except the Scotch Bonnet - too hot for me!!

Cubanelle
Poblano
Jalapeno
Chipotle
Scotch Bonnet
In that order. We grow Scotch Bonnet or Habanero's. Love them all.
