The Pantry Quiz #47

Cashews.

True or false?

I love cashews (true). In fact, I no longer buy them until I have a recipe planned, because I will nibble at them nonstop (true). For each of these statements about cashews, answer true or false:

1. Cashews are not nuts.
2. They are in the same plant family as poison ivy.
3. Cashews are native to India.
4. Cashew paste is sometimes used to make vegan cheese.
5. Cashews can be stored in the freezer for up to six months.

Please leave your answer in the comments, and let us know whether you have this ingredient in your pantry.

[Last week's answer: Tamarind. I keep tamarind concentrate, and blocks of tamarind pulp, in my pantry.]

All true! I love them too!

I love them too. And I think all these are true, although I only found out a few years ago that cashews were not nuts!

I am pretty certain that all are true except the statement that cashews are native to India. We saw cashew trees in St. Lucia on a tour of the mud baths area and while they could have been brought there from India, I *believe* the tour guide said they were native to South America.

Thanks as always for the brain stimulation, Lydia! :-)

All true.
Always have them on hand.

That's what cashews look like off the tree!?!

flashback to 'Truth or Consequences'
reminding me of the time Jen ate a mango down to the skin and ended up with poison ivy rash all around her mouth -- another PI relative.

Yes, I buy them in an Indian market.
Cashew butter, which I don't have now, is wonderful!

Well, I know the last few are true, so I'll go with All of the Above.

I like to snack on cashews too, but somehow save enough for pestos and the like.

Thanks!

Cashews are from Brazil, the rest are true.

all true. cashew parm and cheese are great vegan options

One day at work I was eating some cashews when a coworker from Cape Verde informed me that he loved to drink cashew juice. I said "huh" picturing a "nut smoothie" when he educated me on the real origins/uses behind this "nut."
I love learning new things!
