The Pantry Quiz #38

The Pantry Quiz.

What is it?

One of my favorite pantry items, considered a yang food by Chinese and Japanese cooks, is sold by the hand. To cook with it, you break off a finger. What is it?

__________

Please leave your answer in the comments, and let us know whether you have this ingredient in your pantry.

[Last week's answer: Mayonnaise gets its name from Mahon, Spain. Worcestershire Sauce, from Worcester, England. Dijon mustard from Dijon, France. Tabasco is named for a state in Mexico, and Demarara sugar gets its name from Demerara-Mahaica, a region in northeast Guyana.]

Ginger - Yes it is in my pantry

Ginger is in my freezer ready to go at any time:D

Ginger, and I just bought some yesterday.

I think it's ginger, too, and that your photo is really neat.
Thanks!

Ginger, not Mary Ann.
Yes, it is in the pantry.
P.S. Very cool photo

Ginger root! One of my top favorite flavors - I always have some in my refrigerator.

A few years ago you had a guest post about growing ginger. I put some in a pot and it's been charming, not yang.... It sends up strong shoots from new segments -- which in a pot might be toes -- then dies back in winter. It's back now!

Ginger, got some in the freezer. Grate it and freeze in small amounts, or slice a bit and freeze. It'll always be ready!
PS Love the photo!

Ginger!!!!!! I need to re-read your post about planting it!!

It's ginger. I keep it in a jar of sherry in the fridge.

Ginger and I have a few hands of it in my kitchen.

I peel ginger root and freeze it in a plastic bag. When I need some it is easy to grate while still frozen. Never spoils!

Ginger root, I just used up my last piece, need to buy some more.

Ginger, Its in my pantry. I also freeze it.

I would say it is ginger. I keep fresh ginger in my freezer, so yes it is a pantry item.
