A wish for the new year: No Kid Hungry
At the start of each new year, I reflect on many things, including how fortunate we (and our family and friends) are to have a safe and warm place to live and nutritious food on the table.
The Perfect Pantry always holds enough food to feed our family for a few weeks, though toward the end, those meals might get a bit weird. And while the occasional "I'm hungry" can be heard, especially in the hour before dinner, the truth is that we are not at risk of hunger. We are only at risk of crankiness.
For more than 17 million children in America, the risk of hunger is real, and the physical and psychological effects can last a lifetime.
Here's how you can help end childhood hunger by 2015:
Go to Share Our Strength to learn more about childhood hunger in America.
Then, please go to No Kid Hungry and join Jeff Bridges, the Voltaggio brothers and me in taking the pledge.
And if you want to do more, share this post and others like it on Facebook and Twitter, and email to your friends.
Thank you so much. We can end childhood hunger in America. We can do it, together.
Happy new year to all.
Disclosure: The Perfect Pantry earns a few pennies on purchases made through the Amazon.com links in this post. Thank you for supporting this site when you start your shopping here.
You're 100% right. I've taken the No Kid Hungry Pledge and I'm hosting my area's National Food Bloggers' Great American Bake Sale in the spring. Kids are our future.
"the truth is that we are not at risk of hunger. We are only at risk of crankiness." Well said! That's a lesson that I wish I could ingrain in my niece and nephew.
thanks. Happy New year
What a great cause to start the year with. Happy New Year to you- and I look forward to another year of wonderful food writing on your blog.
RJ, that's fantastic! Thanks for sharing your strength.
Julia, it's hard for kids to understand the difference between "hungry" and "hunger", but with an activist aunt like you, they'll get it.
Milton, happy new year to you, and thanks for being such a faithful reader here.
Nupur, thank you so much. Sending best wishes for the new year!
I LOVE YOU for posting this! I had already talked to my family about our making a one year commitment to maximizing our contributions and efforts toward this one particular food pantry in our area. We are going to do three Drop in And Decorates, three SOS Bake Sales and I am going to be using all those freebie coupons I get from various sources to obtain things for the pantry.
THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR PEOPLE BEING HUNGRY IN THIS COUNTRY!
