A new Bookworm? Oui, oui!

A French professor from New York, Mary of Ceres & Bacchus is this week's Bookworm in the Pantry. Her beautiful blog, which she started last Fall, reveals Mary's passion for literature, history, travel, food, family, and France. She's put in some time working in restaurants, but says she really learned to cook from the women in her life: her mother, grandmothers, aunts and neighbors. Her husband, Erik, helps by eating all of the dinners she prepares and photographs -- and he's designed her site, too. Currently on sabbatical in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Mary spends her time researching and writing, and, lucky for us, she's blogging, too. Be sure to read Mary's eloquent essay about why she recommends these particular books.

UPDATE. Mary recommended:

  • We Could Almost Eat Outside: An Appreciation of Life's Small Pleasures
  • Dictionnaire Gastronomique Francais/Anglais - Dictionary of Gastronomic Terms French/English
  • The Life of Hunger
  • In Search of Lost Time
  • The Belly of Paris.

(Mary recommends a new translation of The Belly of Paris that's coming out later this year; you can pre-order here.)

Fantastic set of books! Now I have reading to do.

I now have another book to put on my list: Dictionnaire Gastronomique. It will solve many arguments when it comes to translating the names of ingredients. Merci pour cette bonne idee.

Lydia, thanks for that recommendation. I have to confess that I've only recently started to read non-food, non-travel, non-work related books again. It's a nice change I must say.
