The Pantry Quiz #69

Dried mushrooms

Multiple Choice

I always have dried mushrooms in a jar in my pantry. I love to use them, and the soaking liquid in which they're reconstituted, to enrich soups and stews. Which one of the following is not a real variety of edible dried mushroom?

1. Paddy straw
2. Chilean bolete
3. Rusty red
4. Black trumpet

Please leave your answer in the comments, and let us know whether you have this ingredient in your pantry.

3! I consider myself a real mushroom enthusiast, and that's the only one I haven't heard of. My pantry has a HUGE jar of dried mushrooms, they're a must-have :)

I don't know the answer but came by to comment and say- where do you buy dried mushrooms? In the Asian food markets? And how do you use them? Thanks!

Nupur, I've answered your questions by email (don't want to give any clues away here!).

I also grind the dried mushrooms into a powder (with my coffee bean grinder) and then add them to things like meatballs.

rusty red, a mushroom in your yard that seems poisonous for human consumption.

Rusty red is a poisonous mushroom.

Without looking at other people's answers, I'd say Rusty Red. I know there are Straw Mushrooms, Bolete and Trumpets so...

I do have two kinds of dried mushrooms in my pantry, but I'm still totally stumped by this one.

These are Black Trumpet mushrooms

I admit I am not much of a dried mushroom user - I must enlarge my repertoire!
